Washington DC, Apr. 26 /RPS News/ -- According to the Middle East Intelligence Bulletin, President Baschar al-Assad has consolidated power and now makes all major decisions in Syria.

The report asserted that al-Assad has over the last two years become the sole authority in Syria. He determines policy in such areas as the economy, domestic security, military and foreign affairs. The report said Assad no longer faces opposition from the so-called old guard loyal to his late father, Hafez Assad. The report, entitled "The Myth of Syria's Old Guard," said Assad approved and directed Syria's alliance with Iraq under the Saddam Hussein regime. Authored by Gary Gambill, the report said Assad oversaw the smuggling of conventional weapons and other banned equipment to Iraq in 2001 and 2002, which netted hundreds of millions of dollars for his regime. "Mounting evidence compiled by U.S. authorities in Iraq indicates that Assad almost certainly approved Syrian military assistance to Saddam Hussein prior to the U.S.-led invasion," the report said.

Aksam's imprisonment, and the Syrian Baath's subsequent hardline crackdown on dissident and minority groups is indicative of a last desperate gasp of scared thugs attempting to cling to power as the world around them changes.
