UN building in Damascus attacked

MASKED assailants fired rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) at a building which houses UN offices in the Syrian capital early today, witnesses told an AFP journalist at the scene.

Syrian security forces killed one of the assailants while another was captured and at least three escaped in a car, they said, adding that seven men launched the attack in the Mazzeh district where several embassies are located.
A member of the security forces was seriously wounded in the gunbattle, the witnesses said.

One wonders if this attack comes at the hands of Syrian-trained terrorists now turning against their Baathist hosts.

Phone lines into Syria are down

No clear picture of the situation on the ground in Damascus is coming out yet following at least 6 different explosions and a shootout between gunmen and Syrian security. Have relatives in the Mezze area where all the fighting seems to be occuring, but phone lines are down

UPDATE: Int'l lines are back up, situation still unclear
